Sweetbrier Fair - Giving Back

As we all look around ourselves, at the stresses being experienced by our friends and neighbors, it is clear that there is a great need for charity, acts of kindness and words of encouragement.

Because we are a store for women, our giving is focused on women in need. We have chosen to focus our local support to the Women's Health Center at University Hospital. We also offer a discount to all school employees (the keepers of our children), and also support many local fund raising organizations by donation of products throughout the year. In the next few weeks the Giving Box will be making it’s debut in the store. The Giving Box will be an opportunity for people to donate funds to local causes or charities and Sweetbrier Fair will match the customer donations. Please submit your request to have your charity or cause be the Giving Box recipient. This is just another small way that we feel we can give back and make an impact on things in our community directly and touch those who have supported our store through the years.

Many of the companies that are represented in our store also have philanthropy and charity at the core of their corporate value structure. This is a trait that is becoming more rare in these difficult economic times. Having wonderful products to offer our customers is our top priority but supporting companies in those offerings who share similar principals and contribute to the cause of a better world makes the Sweetbrier experience all the more unique and special. To recognize these companies and some of their contributions we will feature a section called “giving back” on our website and include a giving back spotlight in our newsletters.

We are all one community. Each of us plays a vital part in making our community a better, kinder place. Come in. Visit with us. Meet our Giving Box.

Dear Friends,

Cooler mornings and shorter days signal that summer is passing. Summer is my favorite time. It is family beach time, time to visit upstate New York family, and time with grandchildren.

This summer was different. A part of it was unexpectedly very different.

I lost a dear friend to pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic cancer has a poor prognosis, even when diagnosed early. Pancreatic cancer spreads rapidly. It is seldom detected in its early stages. That is a major reason why it is a leading cause of cancer death. Signs and symptoms may not appear until it is advanced.

She did not have much time after the diagnosis, but she and her family made the most of the time they were allowed.

Her family has asked that memorials be made to The Lustgarten Foundation, created in 1998 to advance scientific and medical research related to the diagnosis, treatment, cure and prevention of pancreatic cancer.

The Foundation will be our first Giving Box recipient.

Pediped was founded to provide children with shoes designed to meet the needs of their developing feet. It is their desire to care for the specific needs of children extending beyond shoes. The company has grown tremendously thanks to you our loyal customers and would like to share this success with others. This is why they are partnering with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Pediped is making a difference not only with children’s feet but with making special wishes come true. In Fall 2006 Pediped donated 500 pairs of shoes to K.I.D.S.- Kids in Distressed Situations Inc., These shoes were provided to children that were ill, living in poverty and/or the victims of natural disasters. We think this is a fabulous way to give back!

Courage. Compassion. Commitment. These are the words that define the fight against breast cancer. Vera Bradley established The Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer in 1998 after a very dear friend lost her courageous battle with this disease.

Nearly $6 million has been raised since they began their efforts. They have completed two major endowments to the IU School of Medicine to support the Vera Bradley Chair in Oncology and to establish the Vera Bradley Center for Breast Cancer Research.

The new Vera Bradley Center for Breast Cancer Research allows the Vera Bradley Chair in Oncology, Dr. Linda Malkas, and her team to focus on a revolutionary biomarker technology that reveals crucial genetic information. This data could lead to earlier breast cancer diagnosis and more effective treatments and therapies. We think this is pretty neat!

A portion of every Bella Tunno product will be donated to the Matt Tunno Memorial Fund. This fund was established in loving memory of Matt Tunno. Matt is Michelle Tunno Buelow's (founder of BELLA TUNNO) late brother. Matt's life was cut short, but his memory and passion will live on through proceeds from Bella Tunno sales. Matt was a highly passionate and loving brother, son, friend, student, musician and environmentalist. Matt’s goal was to protect the environment and his hope was to make this world a better place for all of us. In his absence, BELLA TUNNO will try to meet his goals and make his dreams a reality. Megan Sticher has been a nurse in Chattanooga for 7 years and is a family nurse practitioner who enjoys her job very much. She has always loved working with pearls and has done a lot of breast cancer education as a nurse. She simply blended her love for jewelry and education for breast cancer and came up with Pearls with a Purpose.

Breast cancer affects about 1 in 8 women and most everyone knows a loved one or a friend who is a survivor or victim to breast cancer. Megan like most of us couldn't imagine having to battle breast cancer and the personal trauma that dealing with a mastectomy brings as well; it can really cause self esteem and other difficult emotional issues with disfigurement after surgeries. She wanted women to still feel self worth and good about themselves and the jewelry surely helps with that. Patients and those who are affected by this horrible form of cancer are touched by the love and compassion that comes with receiving these special pearls. Megan donates proceeds from the sale of the pearls to breast cancer research. The Sweetbrier family also donates to the breast cancer cause and chooses to do so locally by supporting the University Hospital Breast Health Care Center.
